5 Things to Do Before Your Brazilian Wax (And 3 Things to Absolutely Never Do)

Let’s be honest: the Brazilian wax has a reputation that’s slightly more intimidating than it deserves.

Yes, it’s a sensitive area. Yes, there’s some discomfort involved. But here’s what nobody tells you: the experience varies enormously based on preparation, technique, and the products used. A well-prepared client, a skilled technician, and high-quality hard wax? The whole thing is surprisingly manageable. A poorly-prepared client with bargain wax? That’s a different story entirely.

Let’s make sure you have the first experience.

5 Things To Do Before Your Appointment

1. Let it grow. Hair needs to be at least a quarter inch long — roughly the length of a grain of rice, for the wax to grip properly. If it’s too short, the wax can’t do its job and you’ll end up with patchy results and more irritation. We know. The waiting is annoying. Do it anyway.

2. Exfoliate gently 24-48 hours before. A light exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells and reduces the chance of ingrown hairs. Emphasis on gentle, no aggressive scrubbing right before your appointment.

3. Show up clean and dry. Skip the lotion, oil, or any product in the area on the day of your appointment. These create a barrier that prevents the wax from adhering properly.

4. Take an over-the-counter pain reliever 30-45 minutes before if you’re sensitive. Ibuprofen or acetaminophen can take the edge off. Not mandatory, but worth knowing about.

5. Breathe. Seriously. Tension makes everything worse. The more relaxed you are, the smoother the process. KimberlyAnn has done this hundreds of times. You are in very capable hands.

3 Things to NEVER Do

1. Don’t shave between appointments. Shaving changes the hair texture and growth pattern, making the next wax more difficult and more uncomfortable. Commit to the process.

2. Don’t wax right before your period. Sensitivity is significantly higher in the days leading up to and during menstruation. Timing your appointment for the week after your period is always a better experience.

3. Don’t show up sunburned. Waxing on sunburned or irritated skin is a recipe for a bad time. If you’ve been in the Carmel sun, give your skin a few days to recover first.

Why Berodin Hard Wax Makes All the Difference
At Monterey Bay Bodyworks, we use Berodin Hard Wax exclusively for Brazilian services. Hard wax adheres to the hair, not the skin, which means significantly less irritation, less redness, and a more comfortable experience overall. It’s the gold standard for a reason.
